SLEEP APNEA
At Reno Pulmonary and Sleep Center, we specialize in diagnosing and treating sleep apnea, a common and potentially serious sleep disorder that affects your breathing during sleep. Led by Dr. Steve Mashour, our team is dedicated to helping you achieve restful, restorative sleep and improved overall health.
What Is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea is a condition in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. These interruptions, known as apneas, can last from a few seconds to a minute or more and may occur dozens or even hundreds of times per night.
There are three main types of sleep apnea:
- Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA): The most common type, caused by a blockage of the airway due to relaxed throat muscles.
- Central Sleep Apnea (CSA): Occurs when the brain fails to send the correct signals to the muscles controlling breathing.
- Complex Sleep Apnea Syndrome: A combination of OSA and CSA.
Common Symptoms of Sleep Apnea
- Loud snoring.
- Episodes of stopped breathing during sleep, often noticed by a partner.
- Gasping or choking sounds during sleep.
- Excessive daytime sleepiness or fatigue.
- Morning headaches.
- Difficulty concentrating or memory issues.
Irritability or mood changes.
If left untreated, sleep apnea can lead to serious health complications, including high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, and stroke.
Our Comprehensive Approach to Sleep Apnea Care
Diagnosis
Accurate diagnosis is the first step in managing sleep apnea. At Reno Pulmonary and Sleep Center, we use state-of-the-art diagnostic tools, including:
- Overnight Sleep Studies (Polysomnography): A detailed analysis of your sleep patterns, breathing, and oxygen levels conducted in a sleep lab.
- Home Sleep Testing (HST): A convenient option to evaluate breathing disruptions in the comfort of your own home
Personalized Treatment Plans
Once diagnosed, we develop a tailored treatment plan to meet your specific needs.
Sleep Apnea Treatment Options
Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP)
The most effective treatment for obstructive sleep apnea.
Delivers constant air pressure through a mask to keep your airway open during sleep.
Oral Appliances
Custom-fitted devices worn during sleep to reposition the jaw and prevent airway collapse.
Lifestyle Modifications
Recommendations for weight loss, smoking cessation, and other changes to improve sleep apnea symptoms.
Surgical Options
For severe cases, surgery may be recommended to remove or reduce tissue blocking the airway.
Advanced Therapies
Options such as bilevel positive airway pressure (BiPAP) or adaptive servo-ventilation (ASV) for complex or central sleep apnea.
